As one of the industry leaders for the past 15 years in eco-friendly packaging and materials, we understand that many of our potential customers have an interest in recycled and recyclable content, including FSC certified products. We know that your branding conveys your company’s messaging to your end users, including that all important focus on sustainability. For this reason, the vast majority of the boxes we print proudly display a recycle logo, or some note on how the packaging was made with recycled content. If you haven’t already considered it, FSC certified material may be a great option for you to consider, if you are a green-minded business.
What does FSC Certified mean?
FSC certified material simply means that it meets the requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council. The FSC is an international, not for profit organization whose main mission is to ensure ethical forest management and protect natural resources. The FSC label has come to be known as the gold standard. While there are a variety of criteria involved, essentially the end goal is material that is sourced from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.
There are 3 FSC labels you may find on a box or other packaging product.
FSC 100%–All materials used have been sourced from FSC standard forests.
FSC Recycled—Materials are verified as being made from 100% recycled content (Post consumer or pre consumer).
FSC Mix—Essentially a combination of the two above.
What packaging product(s) is FSC board available on?
On corrugated die cut mailers or RSCs, FSC board can be available MOST of the time. However, it is important to note that FSC board may require higher minimums, higher cost, and availability will depend on many factors. Some of these factors include the sheet size, box size, board grade and fluting.
Paperboard products, like folding cartons or even rigid mailers can also be FSC certified material, depending on all of the factors noted above, but also including the board caliper (ex: .018 vs .024 pt board).
